What is St. Jude Media Ministry?

Excerpts from an article by Dave Condren, from The Buffalo News, February 17, 1996.

The message is direct and compassionate. It goes out on the airwaves at quiet times, never during the rush hour. It is aimed at the lonely, the desperate, those who have nowhere to turn.

"Are you feeling downhearted, lonely, spiritually dry?" a voice asks. "Don't be discouraged. You're a good person and the Lord loves you very much. Maybe its time to come back to your roots, back to the Lord."
"The response to the simple message and invitation to write for help to Box 172 in Clifton, NJ, has been amazing," said Father John Catoir, the voice on the radio.

Those who have contacted him include a woman who told of four suicide attempts, several other individuals who were considering killing themselves and people who are angry with the Catholic Church.

The letters that Father Catoir receives are in response to a new evangelization effort he launched in October of 1995.

Known as the St. Jude Media Ministry, it uses 30 second radio messages carried on 1026 stations on the Westwood One network to tell people that God loves them.

From the many letters he receives, Father Catoir said, he knows he has "touched a lot of lives... The ad industry says that for every letter you receive, there are 450 people who feel the same way but did not take the trouble to write."
